Kibbutz Bar’am sits directly beside Israel’s border with Lebanon. Before the war it cultivated 370 acres of orchards, growing apples, nectarines, plums and kiwis, producing approximately 6,000 tonnes of fruit and generating an estimated £15 million in sales annually. By the end of the war, two thirds of those orchards had been destroyed.

‘You can’t ask a farmer on some kibbutz, “What’s your dream for five years’ time?” He said, “What are you talking about? I don’t have tractors to go back to work tomorrow. They were stolen by the terrorists.” So we realized there was no opportunity to be strategic at that point.’

In the aftermath of Oct. 7, 2023, Israel’s agricultural community was upended. Kibbutz Kissufim, roughly a half-mile from the Gaza border, was desperately hard-hit.

“The kibbutz lost 20 members who were murdered or killed, most of the homes were damaged, 20 houses were completely destroyed and the entire community was evacuated. Only now, nearly two years later, have families begun the gradual process of returning home,” says Keren Berler, CEO of Kissufim Bonim Atid.
